07 to 12 R1 upgrade

I am looking into the performance differences between the 2007 and 2008+ R1, mainly the variable velocity stacks and throttle body changes. Someone's selling a 2012 ECU and airbox for $700, and I'm considering that over just flashing my '07 ECU. Would I also need the harness and throttle bodies? Is modifying my '07 harness an option or is there anything else I'm missing?

Hmm. I think the 2012 ECU and airbox won't plug-and-play with your '07. Different harness types, throttle bodies, and sensor setups mean you may likely need the full 2012 wiring loom and throttle bodies to make it work properly. For this, I think you'll likely need the matching throttle bodies and harness too. 2008+ models use different sensors and wiring layouts. Modding your '07 harness might work, but it's tricky unless you're pretty good with electronics. Try checking if a full conversion kit is cheaper or easier.

Makes sense, thanks for clarifying, it sounds like the swap could get more involved and costly than I thought. I'll probably explore flashing my '07 ECU first and see if that meets my goals

Got it, thanks. I'm not super experienced with wiring mods, so a full conversion kit might be the safer route. I'll compare costs with just flashing my '07 ECU before deciding

I think that once you start fiddleing with the wiring and those kinds of mods, the time and money you'll throw at your bike will probably be more than just getting an R1.

Totally feel you, @Matt Edisa. Once you start mixing ECUs, harnesses, and throttle bodies, it can turn into a rabbit hole fast. Flashed ‘07 ECU is definitely the simpler route unless you’re ready for some serious wiring work.

Agreed with that take @Nocarforme. Once wiring and sensor swaps enter the chat, the value math gets ugly fast, and a good ECU flash usually gives you most of what you’re chasing without the headache.
